OPADE featured in SPRI’s blog: a recognition of the project’s impact on mental health research

Jun 1, 2026.

The OPADE project continues to gain visibility beyond the scientific community. On 26 May 2026, the SPRI (Basque Agency for Business Development) published an article on its blog dedicated to I+D+i highlighting OPADE as a leading European initiative in the personalisation of antidepressant treatments through artificial intelligence.

The article describes how OPADE develops predictive tools to improve the response to antidepressant treatments, and singles out Biokeralty Research Institute as the Basque company participating in this Horizon Europe-funded initiative.

A growing relationship with the Basque innovation ecosystem

This recognition is the latest milestone in OPADE’s ongoing connection with SPRI and the Basque health innovation ecosystem. Just two months ago, in March 2026, Ángel del Pozo from Biokeralty presented OPADE as a success story at SPRI’s Information Day on Funding Opportunities for International Collaboration in R&D&I: HEALTH, held in Bilbao.

The publication of this article reinforces that recognition and broadens OPADE’s reach to the wider community of Basque companies, technology agents and health system professionals who follow SPRI’s channels.

Raising awareness of a global challenge

The SPRI article underlines the scale of the problem OPADE is working to address: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) affects 280 million people worldwide, and currently only around 6% of patients benefit from the first antidepressant prescribed to them. By combining multi-omics analysis (integrating genetic, epigenetic, microbiome and immunological data) with AI/ML-based predictive tools, OPADE aims to end the trial-and-error approach that still characterises treatment of depression today.
